Day 1: Cusco – Tambomachay – Qoricocha Lagoon – Pucamarca – Huchuy Qosqo
The hike starts at Tambomachay, where you will have lunch by the Qoricocha Lagoon. In the afternoon, you will walk for 4 hours until you reach the archaeological site of Huchuy Qosqo.
Day 2: Huchuy Qosqo – Lamay – Ollantaytambo train station – Aguas Calientes village
After breakfast, you will explore the Inca archaeological site, have lunch in Lamay (in the Sacred Valley of the Incas) and then board the train to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu village).
Day 3: Aguas Calientes town – Machu Picchu – Ollantaytambo train station – Cusco
In the morning, you will explore Machu Picchu, have lunch in Aguas Calientes, then take the train back to Ollantaytambo train station. Afterward, private transportation will take you back to the city of Cusco.
This trek, known as Huchuy Qosqo, is one of the most beautiful and is a shorter, slightly easier alternate version for those with limited time. It is ideal for families and those who want to hike.
Located 50 km north of Cusco, in the upper part of the Sacred Valley of the Incas and at an altitude of 3600 meters above sea level, its name means “small Cusco”. This site, with several palaces and temples, was built by the Incas and its leader was the Inca Wiracocha.
Day 1: Cusco – Tambomachay – Qoricocha Lagoon – Pucamarca – Huchuy Qosqo.
We will pick you up at 6:00 am from your hotel and take you to Tambomachay (3,600 m/12,467 ft), where you will meet the muleteers who will be in charge of carrying our trekking equipment for 2 days. Then, we will start our hike, ascending for 2 hours until we reach our first pass (4,100 m/13,451 ft). You will be able to enjoy breathtaking views of the city of Cusco, the highest snow-capped mountain in Cusco located to the south and the mountains surrounding the city of Cusco. After another hour of hiking, we will arrive at the Qoricocha lagoon, where we will have our lunch. Our support staff, including the cook and muleteers, will have prepared a delicious lunch. After lunch, we will hike uphill for another hour to the second pass, which is the highest point of our trek (4,200 m/13,780 ft). We will take pictures and enjoy the scenery. Then, we will start descending. The rest of the trail is downhill for 4 hours. We will pass through potato-growing valleys, a very beautiful canyon, and, most importantly, we will walk along part of the original Inca trail. When we arrive at the archaeological site of Huchuy Qosqo, we will camp on one of the terraces, and our support staff will have everything ready for us. You will enjoy tea or hot chocolate with popcorn, and your guide will inform you about the plan for the next day. Then, we will serve you dinner, which you will enjoy. After dinner, weather permitting, you will be able to stargaze at the Milky Way before going to sleep.

Day 2: Huchuy Qosqo – Lamay – Ollantaytambo train station – Aguas Calientes village
You will be woken up with a hot coca tea and breakfast will be prepared for you by our support staff. After breakfast, you can choose to explore the archaeological site of Huchuy Qosqo with your guide. You will learn about the history of the Incas and the purpose for which Huchuy Qosqo was built on top of the mountain. You will also enjoy the stunning scenery of the entire Sacred Valley of the Incas.
Next, we will hike down a zigzagging path for 2 hours until we reach the village of Lamay (2,941m/9,649ft), located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Our support staff will have lunch ready for us. After lunch, we will bid farewell to our support staff and give them our personal appreciation as a tip. They will not be joining us to Machu Picchu. Our private transportation will be waiting to take us on a tour throughout the Sacred Valley of the Incas, passing through the towns of Calca and Urubamba, until we arrive at the train station in Ollantaytambo. You will board the train with your guide to the town of Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu village). The train ride will take one hour and 45 minutes, passing through the Urubamba canyon, which is famous for its stunning views and vegetation. Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, your guide will take you to your hotel where you can take a hot shower and get ready for dinner, which is included in a tourist restaurant. During dinner, your guide will inform you about the plan for the next day, which is the visit to the citadel of Machu Picchu.

Day 3: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Ollantaytambo – Cusco
After enjoying breakfast at your hotel, your guide will meet you to take you to the bus that will transport you to the entrance of Machu Picchu. The bus ride takes about 30 minutes on a winding road. Once at the archaeological site, you will pass through the main checkpoint and show your original passport. Your guide will then take you to the top of Machu Picchu for the classic photo and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. You will then descend through the citadel, visiting the most important temples and sites with your guide. After the tour, we will take the bus back to the town of Aguas Calientes for lunch (not included). Your guide will then inform you about your train back to Ollantaytambo, so be sure to arrive at the train station 30 minutes before departure. Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, our private transportation will be waiting to transfer you to your hotel in Cusco.
Please note that the arrival time in Cusco will depend on the availability of your train ticket.

VERY IMPORTANT:

TOILETRIES:
How many days of acclimatization do I need before starting the trek?
We recommend that you arrive in the city of Cusco at least 2 days in advance to acclimate to the altitude and avoid possible altitude sickness during our Salkantay tour. To help with acclimatization, we offer tours around the city of Cusco, such as CITY TOUR, SACRED VALLEY, MARAS MORAY, MARAS SALT MINES, WALKING TOUR, which will help you get used to the altitude.
Season: any month of the year (rainy season from December to March).
Information meeting or briefing:
The information meetings are held the night before the trek begins. You will receive information about the 3 days and 2 nights of the tour. This meeting lasts approximately 30 to 45 minutes. If you cannot attend, you must inform us by email to arrange your meeting with your guide on another date or time.
Payment of trek balance (in Cusco):
The payment of the trek balance must be paid at the time of the meeting or one day before. We appreciate it if you pay the balance in cash. You will have the option to withdraw money from ATMs in the Plaza de Armas of Cusco or on Avenida El Sol, which is the commercial street of Cusco, where banks, ATMs, etc. are located. We do not accept bank checks or traveler’s checks.
Travel bag or canvas bag:
You will receive a canvas bag or travel bag that the horses will carry. In this bag, you will put your clothes for the 3-day trek, sleeping bag, and mat.
NOTE: You will also need a backpack to carry your personal items, such as sunscreen, water, rain gear, sunglasses, etc.
WHAT DO I DO IF I WANT TO CLIMB THE MOUNTAINS OF:
Huayna Picchu / Machu Picchu Mountain:
The Machu Picchu citadel is more beautiful when viewed from above. Therefore, hiking one of the mountains next to the ruins is the best option.
Huayna Picchu: it is the most popular and must be reserved in advance, as it sells out very quickly. This hike takes approximately 45 minutes to the top and another 45 minutes down. Tickets are sold in time slots, indicating when you can start this hike.
First session: 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. Second session: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
This refers to the time period when you can start your hike. We usually book the second session so you can enjoy your tour of the Machu Picchu citadel with your guide. Afterward, you will do this hike on your own, although your guide will show you where to start.
Machu Picchu Mountain: The route of this hike is slightly longer than that of Huayna Picchu. The hike has an ascent that takes 1.5 hours to the top and another 1.5 hours back.
First session: 7 AM to 8 AM. Second session: 9 AM to 10 AM.
Peru Infinite Travel will offer the second session for this hike.
Strikes / Demonstrations:
Unfortunately, strikes are frequent in Peru and can disrupt our tours. Roads are often blocked, and trains stop. We will ensure that your trek continues as planned, even if it means leaving the night before the start date. Under these circumstances, it may be necessary to cancel tours, but our operations department will coordinate with you in this situation. Your safety is always our top concern.
Lost and Found:
Each customer is responsible for their belongings throughout the tour. Be careful where you leave your belongings and remember to pick up all your items from our vehicles, shops, restaurants, etc. Other hikers or teams may pick them up without knowing who the owner is.
Return to Cusco:
After visiting Machu Picchu, you will need logistics to return to the city of Cusco. Here we explain part of the logistics included in the tour.
From Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes, there is a 25-minute bus ride to the town. Buses are first come, first served, and operate all day.
You will take a train from Aguas Calientes to the Ollantaytambo train station. The guide will give you your train tickets with the departure time.
Make sure to arrive at the train station 30 minutes before the departure time. The train ride from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo takes 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Once you arrive at the train station, look for a member of our company who will have your name written on a sign. We will pick you up in our private transportation directly to the hotel in Cusco.
The travel time from Ollantaytambo to the city of Cusco is 2 hours.
